Where are they now: Latroy Hawkins 1991 Gary West Side Cougar Grad

Latroy Hawkins, a 1991 Graduate of West Side High School will be playing the 2008 season with the New York Yankees, on 12/27/2007, he signed a one year $3.75 million contract to pitch for the Yankees in '08...Latroy, 35, played and pitched for the Colorado Rockies that made it to the World Series in 2007...he had a great season, going 2-5, with a 3.42 ERA...spent one month on the DL early in the season with right elbow inflammation, but bounced back to go 2-2 with a 2.63 era over his last 53 outing of the season, holding hitters to .233 batting average during that clip. Latroy made 5 post-season appearances during the Rockies World Series run, allowing just 2 hits and 1 earned run over 5 innings with 1 walk and 3 K's.

Latroy will most likely be setting up Mariano Riveria coming in to fill the holes in the Yank's Relief...so 6-8th innings is likely when you are going to see Latroy #32 enter the game.

Hawk is entering his 14th season in the Major Leagues and has been with 5 other teams, since being drafted in the Minnesota Twins in the 7th round in 1991. He has also pitched for the Chicago Cubs, San Francisco Giants, Baltimore Orioles and Colorado Rockies.

Hawk is listed 9th in MLB all-time relief appearances with 532, going into the 2008 season, and tied for 4th among right-handers.

Latroy on becoming a Yankee..."My expectation is to come in and hopefully win a World Series," "I think that's everyone's goal at the Major League level. I know that coming to New York is definitely putting myself in a good position to do so."

The Yankees visit U.S. Cellular and the Chicago White Sox early in the season April for a 3 game set April 22-24, all 8pm games. Be sure to put those games to your schedule and root on your favorite Gary Native.

We will have more updates on Latroy throughout the season, so stay tuned and make you add this blog to your favorites or subscribe for automatic updates.

Latroy Hawkins, discusses peer pressure with an audience from the Gary, Indiana Boys and Girls Club of America.

A message to the Post-Tribune and Mike Hutton

This message is in response to an article posted www.blogs.suntimes.com/hutton/2008/01/basketbrawl_1.html

which I guess is a reply to this blog...
http://www.post-trib.com/sports/hedger/762568,hedg.article

just in case they don't publish it...here is my response to this ridulous blog that he wrote

Are you kidding me...I was at that game and it was a wild one...and when I say wild one...it was a good fight from beginning to end...when I say fight, I don't mean fist to fist, but good, hard basketball...I think the ref's were a little to ticky, tacky with the fouls that were called on Thea Bowman...that I do believe...now I will say that...the Bowman boys were a little over-matched by the power and size of West Sides Varsity seniors playing against a team full of sophomores.

Now I will tell you this...there is blog that was written GI HS Sports Blog even before I saw this article...and I am angry to hear the fact that you thought was a war...I on the other hand...didn't see anything more than a championship fight...it was no different than when the bulls played the pistons...where you knew when they played that it was going to be a war...whether it was the 1st game of the season or the 7th game of the Conf Finals...this is a new battle for west side you can rest assure...as young as those boys are from bowman...playing against competition that is bigger and stronger...they are only going to get better as they get older, stronger and better...the problem right now is they are the little brother of the Gary Schools and eventually the little brother is going to get bigger and stronger...

Yeah towards the end of regulation..it did get a little more physical, but that is expected as Bowman is trying to stake their claim...you can't push us around forever...Bowman did take a couple of hard fouls, but was that the reason for the stoppage when WS was up by 16 with 30-40 seconds to go..the problem came as the fans and some parents were getting on the refs...after the hard foul that got that WS boy ejected...other than that it was a good fight by the Bowman team.

To say that Boyd is not teaching his boys morals and sportsmanship is simply not correct...I think that someone got the wrong news flash and is listening to the wrong gossip...why is it that a Black Man can't have confidence in his team and his craft...I for one was not a Boyd supporter at the beginning as I never thought of Boyd as a B-ball coach...Baseball yes, but not b-ball...he has proven me wrong and I will admit that...I actually commented to a couple alumni that I was sitting with that Boyd has that swagger and that is a good thing...you need that...you think those other coaches downstate don't have it...you think Jim East doesn't have it, if you don't then you are thinking wrong...and he has a state championship to say that yesss...he does deserve to have his swagger!

I am so sick of all the negative press about GI...I thought sports was a way to get away from all the crazy stuff in real life...come on yall get real.

Gary HS Boys Basketball this weekend

This weekend, I of course, will be at the Panther Den watching my school play against the Cougars, the Panthers ain't doing to well this year, only have 2 wins on the season...maybe Coach McKissack can make a statement against our rivals...and then on Saturday I will be watching Bowman play this Ft. Wayne team...I keep hearing a lot about Cylk Joseph so I am going to check him out...I went to the game that they lost, at West Side last week...he didn't play that much due missing practice earlier in the week due to personal family issues...Coach Marvin Rea says that this is the one the best kids he has seen in long time to come through Gary...and that is saying a lot! He said that on any giving night Cylk could put up 40 points if he just gets his head into the game and this kid is just a sophomore.

Matter of fact I was impressed by the way that this whole team of sophomores played against a powerhouse West Side last week even though they were clearly over matched by the speed, power and experience of the 4A West Side...it is going to be very interesting as these kids from Bowman grow together and get more experience!
