The Boys basketball team at Thea Bowman are eyeing the prize that is in front of them next Tuesday in East Chicago...
They got their list and they are checking it twice as they get prepared to take on the State Champs from a year ago, Angel Garcia and the East Chicago Central Cardinals.
They understand that even though they might not get the respect that they deserve in NWI, they could do something that not one High School in Gary has done and that is beat the defending state champs this year...and that is what they are aiming for.
I bumped into Cylk Josephs's mom yesterday and she said "it is going to be good game, those boys are poised, focused and ready to go". I asked her about the recent article that the post-trib had online about the basketbrawl that supposely happend at West Side in Janaury because I was at that game and I didn't witness any brawl or anything and we joked about how she shut down the comment section down to that post, and I assured her that her comments in my opinion were right on target as I also believe that The Post-Tribune shedded light on something that never happened.
Anyway I can't wait until Tuesday to see how the Cardinals and the Eagles get it done. It should make for a very interesting game with the young, inexperienced Bowman boys and the experienced-seasoned veteran Cardinals.

Can David get past Golith?...the Bowman boys are poised to do just that.

Wallace subs its way to Victory over the Velt
2/16/08
This game turned out to be a laugh-er...if that is even a word...the one thing that I can say that gives me some hope for the Panthers future is the possibility that we can get a new coach...this is just my opinion! ...and I don't know if I am saying that out of frustration or what...The Velt like I had suspected would stay close by the dubb(see last post) and the fact that this was a Homecoming Game for Velt, plus have Thomas back in the Den...should have been enough motivation...but boy was I wrong.
Looks like when our dear old Panther coach didn't feel the way that I do...I can count the times he got off the bench on one hand, since I haven't been to a lot of their games, I don't know his coaching style and I didn't have anyone to explain it as it was full of Wallace Alum at the game that was played at Velt as I sat with a few Hornet Alum's at the game.
Things that I noticed but of course these are just my opinions...Mr. Coach Renaldo Thomas must have had 150 subs in the game, if a player made a mistake i.e. missing a free throw(and they missed alot) matter of fact, I didn't keep track but I bet they missed more than they made...not good for any team that is ready to make a run for Indy. He also subbed them out for missing baskets, easy or hard ones, fouls, good ones or bad ones, and I saw Coach Thomas once actually pat a player on the butt and saying good job...most times it was another lecture or brow beating...now don't get me wrong they did get some positive reinforcement, but that came from his 15 assistant coaches(not that many actually but he had a lot) so after he lit them up for whatever mistake they made, they had to go console the player...the last time I checked...Mr. Thomas didn't make 100% of his free throws, from the field or where ever...he committed fouls and made some dumb plays, from time to time.
I am sure that Coach Thomas would say that I don't know what I am talking about and I am very sure that he knows more about the ins and outs of basketball than I do...but as a coach you can help and you can hurt a player confidence level too. What happens when one of these kids quits because of the constant badgering and hits the streets for a life of gang-banging or drug dealing and takes to becoming a playground legend when he could have been headed to college with a few tweaks in his game. Do we still think it is funny? I know I don't.
Final Score...
Roosevelt(4-12, NWC 0-2) 53
Lew Wallace 73(12-8, NWC 2-1)73

Friday Night Game of the Week
Tonight I am going to attend the game, Lew Wallace(11-8, 1-1) v. Roosevelt(4-11, 0-1) @ The Panther Den...I am going to see Mr. Renaldo Thomas's Team and el dubb hornets compete against his former team...THE ROOSEVELT PANTHERS!
Even thought the Velt is not doing so great this year, it should be at least a decent game, because no one wants someone with different colors to come back home and beat them...at least that is the message I would convey to the kids...
Especially being a Panther...some type of pride has to be instilled...We Panthers stick together no matter what...wait at least most of us.
Wallace is on a 3 game losing streak and the Panthers are riding a 1 game winning streak into tonight's battle.
I will be there, fellow Panthers will you?
I will have some scores and updates of who I liked and why on both squads tomorrow or later on this evening.

Purdue's NWI connection doing big thangs
You might want to pay attention to what is going on down at Purdue...As I was watching this game come to a conclusion, I could hear TI's Big Thangs Poppin...going off in my head.
A starting lineup of Freshman and Sophomores are blazing the trail and 3 players from the region...2 which are starting --G/F- Robbie Hummel(Valpo), G- E'Twaun Moore(ECC)and G/F- Scott Martin, who is coming off the bench.
Before tonight's game tipped the Boilermakers(20-5) were ranked #23 and will more than likely break the top 20 after pulling off an upset of #9 Michigan State(20-4) tonight and beating another top 10 team in Wisconsin a few days ago...this team is on a mission.
The Boilermakers have reeled off 10 straight victories and have only one lost in 2008 and that loss was avenged tonight at Mackey Arena as they turned up the heat against a #9 ranked Michigan St, winning 60-54
Hummel had 24pts and 11 boards as he hit some huge clutch treys to seal the victory and E'Twaun Moore had 12pts and came up BIG in the last 2 minutes of the game.
Now I got a decision to make either go to EC Central and watch Thea Bowman play The EC Cardinals or stay at home and watch the E'Twaun Moore and the Boilermakers v. Eric Gordon and the Indiana Hoosiers.
What should I do?

ECC Dee Dee Jernigan Update ...playing at wabash valley college
Tonight I was watching the Rutgers v. Tennesse Women's Basketball game and I was like...where is Dee Dee Jernigan?
So I went to Yahoo Sports and typed in Rutgers womens b-ball and looked at the roster...no Dee Dee, and I wondering wtf...so then I did a google search and in the first few hits...I got nothing and hoping that maybe she left after the Don Imus thing, plus I know she wasn't getting much playing time at Rutgers...and then I saw a link to the times from back in December about she had transferred to another school...She is now playing at WABASH VALLEY COLLEGE in Illinois, that made me happy, seeing that I root for everyone that lives or lived in Northwest Indiana, no matter what city to do big things and I like to follow them...unlike our friendly newspapers The Post-Tribune or The Times.
It seems that they pick and choose what and who they want to cover and I simply don't believe that is right thing to do, why not report it all(possible scholarships)...like my grandfather always said "if you are going to do it, you might as well do it right". Maybe our local papers could learn a lesson or two from my grandfather, Sylvester Hodge, or maybe some of these guys did learn something from him, but forgot it. My grandfather taught ROTC at Roosevelt High and Horace Mann High School, after serving 20+ years in the United States Army.
I know they say that they don't have the manpower to dedicate someone to follow each and everyone that graduated from a local school manually, but with the invention and popularity of the internet...don't you think this could be done, I do! If the price was right I would even do it, cause I always thought that the local papers were part of our community and are suppose to report local stuff over national stuff at all times, but I guess I am wrong. -at least that is why I read the local paper.
Anyway to get back on track...Dee Dee is down there at Wabash, doing her thing like she did when she attended East Chicago High School, delighting the fans, with her ball handling skills and quickness...
According to the Wabash Valley College's web site Dee Dee is averaging ...
as of 2/10/08
16.5 pts/gm
5.8 rebounds/gm
44.6% FG%
23-94 =24.4% in 3pt
61.7% FT%
4.4 assists/gm
2.3 steals/gm
